Ep. 12.25.18: Shut Down Trump, Not the Government!
Tuesday Dec 25, 2018
Tuesday Dec 25, 2018
This Week’s Discussion:
In this week’s episode we talk about Treasury Secretary Mnuchin and President Trump seeking to calm financial markets in light of worst stock market month since the Great Depression. We discuss the latest on the government shutdown and what it means to have the criminal and the insane running the country, including the continuing power of the right-wing fringes and the need for a really big...wall. The Trump Foundation, aka the Trump family pocketbook, is shut down. Does this mean we might talk about it for a while, rather than an actual charity like the Clinton Global Initiative? Nah! The departure of the stabilizing influence of Defense Secretary "Mad Dog" Mattis and what is left "running" the country as Trump lashes out wildly at all around him, including Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and anyone else he can blame for his incompetence. The war in Syria ends? The battle against ISIS as well? Which former President is Trump most like? (Hint: it's the one whose presidential fate we want him to share.) And yet, if we can just survive Trump, there are so many hopeful signs for the future as Republican shibboleths continue to go up in flames. IF.

This Week’s Discussion:
In this week’s episode we talk about a federal judge overturning the Affordable Care Act and how it sheds further light on Chief Justice Roberts' long game and the constricting of the Commerce Clause as well as GOP efforts to remake the federal judiciary. Trump fixer Michael Cohen is sentenced and a host of Trump cronies line up to plead guilty and/or cooperate with the Special Counsel, as the noose tightens around the President's neck. The profundity of the choice between the parties becomes clearer, as Dems seek a Green New Deal and GOP continues to insulate itself from democracy while seeking planetary destruction for financial gain. Nancy and Chuck meet with the President and try to show the office the respect it does not get from its inhabitant. Trump civics lessons. Time's Person of the Year choice is a middle finger to the GOP and the right's assault on truth and reason.

This Week’s Discussion:
In this week’s episode we address the latest indications that the House may soon have no choice but to impeach. The latest defections from Trump. Did you know the deadline to get coverage under the ACA is approaching? That's because the White House doesn't want you to. The Post Hoc fallacy and the Trump economy. Why George H.W. Bush, despite his many flaws, is the "best" the GOP has had to offer for a long time. In other words, the least stinky turd in the sewer. The GOP's latest assaults on democracy, and its leadership warranting prosecution and long internment. The existential threat posed to the US by the GOP's dismantling of what's left of US democracy. Was Labor Secretary Alex Acosta an enabler of child sex trafficking, and is he thus the Mississippi of Trump cabinet officials?

THE HOME FOR PROGRESSIVE POLITICS
This Week’s Discussion:
In this week’s episode we address the latest evidence of criminality in the Trump family. What seemed like a damning revelation gleaned from Ivanka's use of private emails for government business has turned into serious small beer once Michael Cohen began cooperating with the independent counsel. Cohen testified under oath in court that President Trump is a criminal and that he is effectively being blackmailed by the President of Russia. Following Cohen's testimony of impeachment-worthy behavior by President Trump, we wonder if there is enough integrity in the GOP or among its voters to think that a Republican president who is proven to be a criminal and effectively an agent of a hostile foreign power might be able to be impeached. We ponder whether there is any accountability for wealthy white criminals anymore. We go to Mississippi, where racist statements do not undermine your senate aspirations, and where Cindy Hyde-Smith thereby was elected. We wonder why Mississippians are so resentful of the federal government even as they continued to be over-represented in it and continue to be its greatest welfare recipients. We discuss how Republicans have finally found the elusive electoral fraud they have long been seeking, and all they had to do to find it was look in a mirror. We discuss how instant runoff elections, or ranked choice voting works, and why it should be implemented nationwide. Finally, we discuss how Donald Trump managed to finally win an argument...against his Chief Justice.
