Ep. 1.26.19: We have Government! (but still no leadership)
Saturday Jan 26, 2019
Saturday Jan 26, 2019
This Week’s Discussion:
The government shutdown ends--at least for a few weeks--as Donald Trump declares victory (without one) and goes home to fight another day. We analyze Trump's speech signaling the end of the shutdown, point out many of its falsities (really, who can count them all?), and discuss why he was willing to capitulate. Is his faux populist bubble beginning to burst? Also, the Russia investigation creeps that much closer to the Don (no, we didn't mean to say Donald) with the indictment of Trump crony, and all around heckuva guy, Roger Stone as Trump continues to openly commit federal crimes.

THE HOME FOR PROGRESSIVE POLITICS
This Week’s Discussion:
We talk about how current events, including the longest government shutdown in US history, once again demonstrate the irreplaceable role of government in promoting well-being. Microsoft offers to donate money to ease the housing crisis in Seattle. Recent research indicates climate change is accelerating even more rapidly than previously feared, not that this info is shared with anyone. Will the government shutdown ever end and, most egregiously for Trump, will it threaten his State of the Union lie-fest? How the latest on Russia and other current events indicate what happens when you abdicate governing responsibility and instead simply up your appeal to bigots. Chief Justice Roberts continues to show his colors, the Supreme Court continues to demonstrate its lack of legitimacy, and why won't liberals acknowledge that? The NY State Senate finally begins to show what a true progressive populism should look like, along with LA teachers, while the other half carves up the world in Davos and we again see the vast gulf between the parties and the need for a steeply progressive tax system.

THE HOME FOR PROGRESSIVE POLITICS
This Week’s Discussion:
We talk about the longest government shutdown in US history, and how it is enabled by a President and political party that cannot feel empathy and care not a whit for the people they are hurting. Trump's "the only thing we have to fear is not enough fear" speech, and how the facts continue to argue against the bigotry espoused by the President and his minions. The confirmation hearings for Attorney General designed William Barr, and why haven't a tyrant-enabler at US chief law enforcement officer may not be such a good idea with a tyrant-wannabee President. The latest bombshells on Trump's collusion with Russia, and the fact that we are having to ask ourselves if, or maybe to what extent, the President of the United States is an agent of a hostile foreign power. What should be done as the evidence continues to mount that the President is a criminal, that he assumed power through criminal behavior, and that he is not seeking to promote the interests of the country?

THE HOME FOR PROGRESSIVE POLITICS
This Week’s Discussion:
The Trump government shutdown approaches the longest ever, its impact on Americans becomes more and more dire, the Senate remains in hiding, and Trump’s and Republicans’ disdain for ordinary Americans becomes even more pronounced. Trump again demonstrates he cares only for himself, with lots of company in the GOP. Trump backs off on Syria, but not his wall even as false equivalencies continue to give Trump and GOP more cover than they deserve. More on discredited GOP policies needing to be laid to rest, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s latest effort to do so, while making Democrats progressive again regarding taxes. How her tax proposal is misconstrued by the media, citizens, and Republican congresspersons, and a primer on how marginal tax rates work (not just for GOP congressmen) and why progressive taxes are fair, necessary and historically-vetted. Continuing to burst the myth of the economic and moral superiority of the rich.

THE HOME FOR PROGRESSIVE POLITICS
This Week’s Discussion:
In this week’s episode we ring in the, shall we say promise, of the new year. We address the tremendous chasm between the two sides in this country right now, and the role of communication in creating and expanding this divide. NASA can send a ship to the edge of the solar system to study a block of ice, and Americans can elect Donald Trump President. The continuing government shutdown is further evidence of the divide in this country, as Trump seeks to placate his brain dead base. The new Democratic House majority unveils its progressive agenda to promote democracy and the interests of citizens, and thus highlights the divide with the GOP that is seeking to undermine both. Both the GOP and reality continue to demonstrate the intellectual bankruptcy of core Republican ideology: market efficiency; limited government; Republican managerial and fiscal responsibility; states' rights; supply side economics; the superiority of the rich.
